About GKare
Couples For Christ (CFC) is an international Catholic charismatic community whose aim is to strengthen family relationships and bring glad tidings to the poor. Founded in the Philippines in 1981, CFC initially focused on evangelization work- spreading the Good News as declared in the Holy Bible. However, realizing that faith must not remain as mere words, it then engaged in various socio-civic endeavors that has truly made faith manifest through actions paralleling the life and mission of Christ.
One of the initial socio-civic initiatives is the CFC Medical Missions Foundation (CFCMMF). At the start, the CFCMMF was no different from other groups or organizations that provide basic services to the poor: a group of doctors, and other health professionals mobilize for a day to treat patients, free medicines were dispensed, and minor dental and surgical operations were performed. Hundreds and even thousands were treated but that was about it. No lasting impact was achieved.

And then, Gawad Kalinga was conceived, shaking the very foundations of our society, throwing out many orthodox assumptions and practices. The very first to go was the mentality that work with the poor is charity and therefore should be done as an ‘outreach’. The cycle of poverty cannot be broken with this pervasive attitude. Certain behavior changes must happen for both the benefactors and the beneficiaries.
While the services done by our teams maybe important and effective, they were not sufficient to address the crying need of the country, particularly in the light of the challenge that must be addressed through Gawad Kalinga. Even the combined weight of the many medical and dental ‘outreaches’ done by various groups has proven insufficient for what is required. The outcomes of the so-called outreach approach are difficult to measure; the benefits are usually temporary. Mendicancy and dole outs are perpetuated and even exacerbated

And so CFCMMF transformed itself into the GIVE KARE HEALTH FOUNDATION, INC. – GKARE - in response to the deeper understanding of its mandate. It developed a strategy that is responsive to the task defined by Gawad Kalinga. By accepting the reality that at least eighty percent of the health needs of the country are not specialty care but basic and primary health care, GKare made the necessary adjustments and implemented deep changes. Thus, GAWAD KALUSUGAN was born.
Currently, Gawad Kalusugan (GKal) takes up the bulk of GKare human and material resources. However, GKare also has other worthwhile initiatives complementing its work in GKal.
1. Service to the members of the Couples For Christ community through blood donation drives and patient-to-doctor referral network
2. Bringing the best doctors and surgeons to the most depressed, underserved, and far-flung municipalities by way of surgical missions as a response to the disproportionate distribution of health professionals in the country and the mass exodus of many health workers
3. Advocating for better disaster preparedness and responding to emergencies and calamities when they strike
